Errors and system failures can be costly, and fixing them post-production can be even more expensive.
To put this in perspective: a 2002 NIST report estimated the global cost of software failures at over 3.3 trillion dollars, while a 2018 report by Synopsys and CISQ estimated the cost within the United States alone at 1.1 trillion dollars. These figures come from different scopes and methodologies, but the trend is clear: the economic impact of software defects is enormous and growing. By implementing effective testing strategies, we can reduce these costs substantially.
Facilitating Changes Safely and Efficiently
Testing also aids in the smooth and secure implementation of changes to the software. It minimizes regression, preventing the occurrence of errors in functionalities that previously worked correctly. Testing is particularly beneficial when new team members unfamiliar with the project or certain areas make changes. The testing phase can catch any unintentional errors or oversights, ensuring the software’s consistency and integrity.
Living Project Documentation
Another notable advantage of software testing is that it serves as a living document of the project. Instead of explaining business requirement nuances or subtle errors, developers can simply say, “Send me the test for this.”

When I face an unfamiliar legacy codebase, the first thing I do is write characterization tests: small tests that capture the current behavior of a method or module, regardless of whether that behavior is correct. These tests act as a safety harness. Once they are in place, I can refactor or fix bugs knowing that any unintended change in behavior will immediately surface as a test failure. Without them, touching legacy code often feels like defusing a bomb blindfolded.
